I was selected by the Bower’s Museum to be one of the art teachers for a research project in collaboration with Hoag Hospital to study how creativity supports healthy aging and can help prevent or at least slow down the onset of Alzheimer’s. Research on Alzheimer’s has uncovered that the creative faculty of the brain is the last to shut down when a person is affected by Alzheimer’s disease and that it is the only part of the brain that can continue to develop and grow if nurtured and exposed to art and creative activities. When I create a work of art, it begins from a place of inspiration. Once I start painting, often new and unexpected things happen on the canvas and I’ll abandon my original idea and allow fresh inspiration and intuition to guide my work.
